Here's a small collection of games designed to make you think. A few of my favorites, anyway.
The Brain StrainerA physics simulation game — add parts to build a contraption to drop a ball on the launch button to fire off a rocket. For a successful launch, you'll have to score enough points by bouncing the ball around a bunch, first. (See the instructions for full details.) Here's a quick building tip: to delete a misplaced component without having to choose the eraser, simply hold the space bar down, and click it. Happy building!
Grid IronSlide the tiles around to lead the little construction dude to all the rivets. Watch out for robots, and for heaven's sake, don't walk off the edge! 5 bridges with 5 levels each to complete.
Tower BlasterStabilize your tower by lining up numbers from smallest to largest, before the filthy vikings stabilize theirs. Your castoff blocks go to the vikings, and vice-versa. Bonus points for lining up consecutive numbers.
Shove ItUse the arrow keys to help the big blue hairy galoot ("Vincent", evidently) push the blue blocks onto the yellow spots — a sort of fancy Sokoban, with a blue monster.
Armor PicrossFill in the squares to create pixel paintings in this logic puzzle game. Numbers to the side and top tell you how many filled squares should be in each row or column. The puzzles here start simply, and gradually become more complicated. There's no way to skip straight to the harder puzzles, but if you give the program permission, it'll save your progress for you.
KretaYou play Ariadne in this top-down maze game. Theseus has gone into the Labyrinth, but still might need your help; find him and lead him to the exit before the Minotaur catches up! You and the Minotaur play number tiles to move. Special tiles also add abilities, or handicap your opponent.
LeversBalance objects on the mobile, and try to keep it on an even keel. Keep all the pieces out of the water long enough, and you'll be rewarded with more bits to add on. Watch out for those pesky birds!
StackopolisClick the tiles to rearrange them to match the blueprint before time runs out. Infuriatingly addictive.
Rocket ManiaOne of my favorite (for some reason—must be all the applause!) PopCap Games. Connect the fuses to launch as many rockets as possible at once. This demo is limited to about ten levels. Aww.
ReflectionsBased on a cool game called Aargon—use mirrors, splitters, and other laser gear to light up light bulbs. Seems simple, but some levels can be pretty challenging!
PrachkaA Russian game that plays well in any language! Shoot a glowing box around in outer space and try to land it in the target by using sides of bricks as stepping stones. Just hit Начать игру on the title screen, and you're off and running!
XrayeAn unusual game (with an ethereal ambient soundtrack, no less!) in which you rotate some sort of wrench-like gadget in a low-gravity environment (the gullet of that thing in Return of the Jedi?), trying to light up pegs. Yes, that's a terrible description. Try it! You'll like it!
