Though I’m only a few pages into the book, the author has already succeeded in painting a beautiful setting and illustrating many complex characters. The story begins with a short legend of a band of heroes lead by the mightiest man in the village, Svein. The band fights together to vanquish the evil Trow, tunneling monsters that kill and eat the townspeople; however, every member of the band is found dead the next day. Many years later, 18 generations to be exact, a male heir of the late Svein is born, Halli, the second son and the heir to the house if the first son dies. Halli, seemingly the main protagonist, is very important in the eyes of the Svein house and seemingly has the same type of bravery as the late Svein. Unfortunately with no man eating monsters to kill, Halli’s raw bravery is often taken out in very dangerous ways, to the dismay of his worried mother. So far this book is amazing illustrative and a fun and quick read.
