SkylarJenkins So I finished the book, and the ending was not the way I expected or hoped but it was good all the same. I have to admit, I did have a few of those moments when I had to just put the book down completely. Marissa
Meyer really played with my feelings on this one.
I would note that one thing that really stuck out was the overall dramatic change that the main character had from beginning to end. Her personality, outlook on life, attitude, status, and even heart (hence the name Heartless) completely changed. In the beginning she was this bright-hearted, full of life, passionate baker, who had hopes of opening her own bakery. She was kind to most and followed all the rules, always conducting herself in a proper manner. Throughout the course of the story, however, you start to see her character mold into a completely different person. She is faced with many adversities. Each one, kind of chips way at her cheerful personality and replaces it with this cold nature that is necessary for her survival. When her last stroke of compassion results in a devastating tragedy, she is totally replaced. She becomes this cold, fierce, heartless (literally…oops, spoiler), strong leader, who is after only one thing… revenge! Pretty much all of the story up until the last few chapters, I wondered why did the author chose such a dark title on a story that is pretty much a fairytale. It was a real “Aha Moment” so to say when the main character transformed, and I made those connections. Ended up being a reallyyy good read, even though it was different from those happy endings I’m used to. Definitely recommend!
