A "client" is a program that allows you to connect to a multi-user game. There are a lot of clients out there—all with different features. I recommend MUCKClient for beginners, since it is simple to set up, and has an easy-to-understand interface. As you get more advanced, you may want to try out others.

• MUCKClient
  This is the "Official Client of Beyond the Bookshelf." Simple, easy to use, and FREE. Download this if you're just getting started. (Please do take a second and register your copy—it entitles you to support, and helps the author keep track of how widely used her software is!)
• MUSHclient
  If you're looking to do some power-MUSHing or coding, I highly recommend this client. Basically simple to use, but full of more features than you can shake a stick at. Excellent interface and comprehensive help. (Also billed as the fastest client for Windows!) $20 shareware.
• zMUD
  A very high-rated client; probably more features than you'll need for Beyond the Bookshelf. It'll run you $25 shareware.
• SimpleMU
  Another client for Windows. Shareware.
• Savitar
  This is the client I use. Very nice. If you use a Mac, you'll want this one!

  Applies to all types and styles of MU*s; makes a good primer.
• Amberyl's MUSH Manual
  Not exactly for the faint of heart, this is the standard reference for anyone interested in building and coding on a MUSH.

  How to avoid behavior that will quickly turn you into a grade-A Pest.

  An extensive site, including a listing of over 1600 MUDs!

  MUSH-specific resources, including a list of active MUSHes

• Zork I: The Great Underground Empire
